Projectors: LCD Verses DLP (The downfall of DLP technology)

The typical question customers ask when buying a new projector for the home, office, or classroom is: should I buy an LCD projector or a DLP projector? LCD, which stands for ‘liquid crystal device’ and DLP, an acronym for ‘digital light processing’ are the two commonplace projector imaging technologies. With so many business brands and types available, it can be challenging for consumers to choose between both technologies. It comes down to the fact that LCD projectors provide superior image quality and colour accuracy. The following article explains why DLP projectors struggle with creating a comparable level of image quality.

Think of a set of blinds in your home on your bedroom window. By pulling a rod you can have the shutters open or closed, according to if you want to let light in or not. And this is exactly how an LCD projector operates. Each pixel functions like an individual shutter on a set of blinds to either pass light through or to block it. DLP on the other hand is made up of millions of microscopic mirrors or ‘pixel elements’ as pros like to call them. Each pixel element functions to either reflect light or block it.

How the light source is processed from the point at which the projector turns on to when the image reaches your screen is extremely significant with regard to image quality, brightness and colour accuracy. LCD projectors direct white light from the lamp by separating it into red, blue and green components, by three mirrors which transfer the coloured light to 3 separate LCD panels. The 3 LCD panels make the elements of the image by processing each pixel on and off. The pixels are then meshed in a glass prism to send the projector image. Something to understad about LCD projectors is that all three colours are sent onto your wall at once. The way a DLP projector functions is widely different and even the way an image looks is not the same. With DLP, white light from the lamp is sent through a turning colour wheel with transparent red, blue and green segments, at speeds up to 11,000 rpm/s. This way of creating an image casts a sequence of red, blue and green light. The millions of micro mirrors as described above reflect the coloured light on the pixels to create the image elements. The elements of the image are displayed in sequence on the screen, one colour at a time. The viewer’s vision will then combine each coloured element of the image into the single full image. Using LCD projectors, all colours are available all the time to create top brightness and great colour accuracy. In DLP, only one colour is available at any given time, and so causing lower colour brightness and accuracy. Some developers have added a white segment for the colour wheel to improve brightness overall, but this then detracts from colour accuracy.

I find in forums all the time that DLP offers a higher contrast ratio and as such must be superior. For those uncertain, the contrast ratio is a measure of a display system defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest white to that of the darkest black that the projector is able to produce. DLP projectors do have high contrast specifications compared to a majority of LCD projectors. At a glance, this can seem to be a plus, however, in the real world, the true black level is determined by the ambient light in the room when the projector is in use. Do not be fooled by contrast specifications on websites and in brochures.

When the content you want to view requires moving images, DLP projection technology can also have image marks, or ‘artifacts’. The most common artifact that a DLP projector forms with moving images is colour break up. Colour break up is incontrovertible in DLP systems because moving images change between the time red, blue and green colours are displayed. LCD projectors do not have this characteristic because all the colours are delivered at once. DLP developers have developed 3DLP solutions using 3 chips to solve the colour break up error, but the price tag of these projectors make them hardly practical for many businesses and consumers.

Another difference between LCD and DLP is how they match the balance for the refractive qualities of light. Think back to high school science, and recall when they taught you how various colours of light refract different amounts when shone through the same lens. The downfall with DLP projectors is that they take the one same panel for the same lens to project Red, Blue and Green. All 3 colours are obviously not the same and refract light at different levels. Usually with a DLP projector, some extra yellow colour will come up above and a superfluous blue will show below something as simple as a single black line. While being built LCD projectors can be adapted to remove these effects on the projected image, because each colour is directed on isolated LCD panels.

The sole true buy point (excluding price) with going with a DLP projector is its smaller overall size and weight. However, this is only relevant in regard to transporting the device and must be traded off against the image benefits of LCD projectors. Yachting and Yacht Clubs

As the Dutch found preeminence in sea power during the 17th century, the initial yacht was a leisure craft used mostly by royalty and secondly by the burghers in the canals and then in the protected and unprotected waters of the Low Countries. Racing was incidental, coming out of private matches. English yachting began with King Charles II of England during his exile in the Low Countries. On his reaffirmation to the English throne in 1660, the city of Amsterdam presented him with a 20-metre (66-foot) pleasure boat with a beam (maximum width) of 5.6 m (18 feet), which he called Mary. Charles and his brother James, the duke of York (James II, sovereign 1685–88), made additional yachts and in 1662 raced two of them from the Thames, from Greenwich, to Gravesend, and the same way back, on a £100 wager. Yachting became fashionable with the affluent and nobility, but after that point the habit did not last.

The first yacht club in the British Isles, the Water Club, was instigated at about 1720 at Cork, Ire., as a cruising and unofficial coast guard association, and held much naval panoply and formality. The closest thing to racing was the “chase,” for which the “fleet” pursued an imagined enemy. The club persisted, mostly as a social club, until 1765, and in 1828, when conglomerating with other clubs, it was known as the Cork Yacht Club (later the Royal Cork Yacht Club).

Yacht racing began in some ordered manner on the Thames about the mid-18th century. The duke of Cumberland instigated the Cumberland Fleet for Thames racing in 1775. When George IV ascended to sovereignty in 1820, it was named the Fleet to His Majesty’s Coronation Sailing Society. The Thames Yacht Club seceded with a racing dispute, to become the Royal Thames Yacht Club in 1830. The first English yacht association had been formed at Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1815, and royal patronage made the Solent - the strait between the mainland and the Isle of Wight - the continuing location of British yachting. The society at Cowes became the Royal Yachting Club, again at the accession of George IV. All members were required to possess boats of at least 20 tons (20,321 kg). Sailing races for great bids were held, and the club life was lovely. It came to be that the Royal Yachting Club boats increased in size to bigger than 350 tons.

In North America, yachting began with the Dutch in New York in the 17th century and continued when the English gained power. Sailing was for the most part for fun and found its epitome in George Crowinshield’s Cleopatra’s Barge (1815), which sailed on the Mediterranean Sea and established a benchmark of luxury and elegance for the later yachts in that area from the late 19th century. The first enduring American yacht club, the Detroit Boat Club, was instigated in 1839. In 1844, John C. Stevens instigated the New York Yacht Club while aboard his schooner Gimcrack.

Kinds of sailboats
The Early sailing yachts were within the style of such naval craft as brigantines, schooners, and cutters from the 17th century until the second half of the 19th century. The style of large yachts was initially heavily put upon by the success of America, which was created by George Steers for a syndicate started by John C. Stevens, and it was the boat for which the America’s Cup (q.v.) had its namesake after its success at Cowes in 1851. The first yachts were not designed and built in a contemporary sense, with just a model used. Not until the latter half of the 19th century did what was labeled naval architecture come about. Not until the 1920s did the employment of the research of aerodynamics do for the craft of sails and rigging what such study had already done for hulls.

Therefore, a rating rule was written, which ended up in the International Rule, taken on in 1906 and amended in 1919. Today, one of the rapidly growing areas in sailing is that of one-design class boats. All boats in a one-design class are manufactured to single specifications in length, beam, sail area, and other elements (for an example of a two-person sailboat, see illustration). Racing such boats can be had on an even playing field with no handicapping required. A perfect example is the generic International America’s Cup Class adopted for racers in the 1992 America’s Cup race.

So long as yachting belonged largely for the royal and the wealthy, expense was no problem, and the size of boats developed, in both length and weight. The ascendancy and desire of smaller yachts happened in the later half of the 19th century in the sailing of the Englishmen R.T. McMullen, a stockbroker, and E.F. Knight, a barrister and journalist. A voyage around the world (1895–98) led single-handedly by the naturalized American captain Joshua Slocum in the 11.3-metre Spray proved the value of small craft. Later in the 20th century, particularly after World War II, smaller racing and pleasure yachts became more popular, down to the dinghy, a favourite training boat, of 3.7 m. In the late 20th century, yachts of less than 3 m were sailed single-handedly across the Atlantic Ocean.

Kinds of power yachts
Post the decade 1840–50, at which point steam began to emulate sail power in public vessels, the steam engine, and later the internal-combustion engine, were increasingly favoured in personal boats. Sizeable power yachts were developed to a high standard, and long-distance sailing was a favourite pastime of the rich. The early power yachts were paddle-wheel boats; those then gave rise to those powered by the wholly submerged screw or propeller sort of propulsion. Like naval and merchant yachts, auxiliaries possessing both sail and power were the yacht fashion for several years. By the latter half of the 20th century, several yachts were still auxiliaries, but the larger part were only power yachts containing gasoline or diesel engines.

In the last decade of the 19th century there was a rise in the manufacture of bigger steam yachts. Notably within these was the Mayflower (1897) of 2,690 tons, that had triple-expansion engines, twin screws, and a compartmented iron hull, and was operated by a crew of over 150. The Mayflower, purchased by the United States Navy in 1898, was the official yacht of the president of the United States until 1929 and saw active service for World War II.

As bigger and more dependable internal-combustion engines were created, many large craft began using them for power. The development of the diesel engine, using heavy oil for fuel, progressed from World War I. During the decade after that, bigger power-yacht building grew, reaching a climax in the Orion (1930) at 3,097 tons. From that point the largest auxiliary yacht constructed was the four-masted, steel, barque-rigged Sea Cloud (1931) of 2,323 tons.

The building of big power craft lessened from 1932, and the fashion after that was for smaller, less expensive yachts. After World War II, many small naval boats were bought by private owners for conversion to yachts. At the late 20th century, yachting had become a internationally popular competition enjoyed by thousands of yachtsmen personally sailing and maintaining their own small recreational boats. The popularity of craft and yachtsmen increased steadily, not only in the traditional locations by the seacoasts but also on inland waterways and lakes.

Proportional, Progressive, and Regressive taxes

Taxes can be categorized by the effect they have on the placement of income and wealth. A proportional tax is a tax that applies the same relative burden on all taxpayers—i.e., when tax liability and income move in the same proportion. A progressive tax is recognisable by a more than proportional rise in the tax liability in relation to the rise in income, and a regressive tax is characterized by a less than proportional increase in the comparable onus. Therefore, progressive taxes are thought of as reducing the lack of equality in income distribution, but regressive taxes are found to cause an increase in these inequalities.

The taxes that are usually believed to be progressive include individual income taxes and estate taxes. Income taxes that are nominally progressive, however, can become less so for the upper-income group—in particular if a taxpayer is allowed to reduce his tax base by nominating deductions or by leaving out some particular income aspects from his taxable income. Proportional tax rates if applied to lower-income groups can also be more progressive if personal exemptions are declared.

Income measured over the course of a given period might not definitely provide the most accurate measure of taxpaying status. For example, transitory rises in income can be saved, and during temporary declines in income a taxpayer may choose to pay for consumption by decreasing savings. So, if taxation is regarded with “permanent income,” it should be less regressive (or more progressive) than if it is made comparable with annual income.

Sales taxes and excises (save on luxuries) are mostly regressive, because the share of one’s income consumed or spent on a specific good decreases as the amount of personal income is raised. Poll taxes (aka head taxes), calculated as a standard amount per capita, obviously are regressive.

It is complicated to term corporate income taxes and taxes on business as progressive, regressive, or proportionate, principally due to the lack of certainty around the ability of businesses to shift their tax expenses (see below Shifting and incidence). This difficulty of nominating who bears the tax burden lays essentially on whether a national or a subnational (that is, provincial or state) tax is being considered.

In analysing the economic purpose of taxation, it is necessary to differentiate between several ideas of tax rates. The statutory rates are those specified in legislature; generally speaking these are marginal rates, but occasionally they are average rates. Marginal income tax rates indicate the fraction of incremental income that is taken by taxation when income rises by one dollar. So, if tax burden grows by 45 cents when income increases by one dollar, the marginal tax rate is 45 percent. Income tax legislation commonly contain graduated marginal rates—i.e., rates that grow as income increases. Heavy analysis of marginal tax rates must review provisions as well as the formal statutory rate structure. If, for example, a particular tax credit (reduction in tax) falls by 20 cents for each one-dollar growth in income, the marginal rate is 20 percentage points higher than nominated by the statutory rates. Since marginal rates specify how after-tax income changes in response to changes in before-tax income, they are the necessary ones for considering incentive effects of taxation. It is even more complicated to know the marginal effective tax rate to apply to income from business and capital, since it may rely on such considerations as the structure of depreciation allowances, the deductibility of interest, and the provisions for inflation adjustment. A basic economic theorem grants that the marginal effective tax rate in income from capital is zero under a consumption-based tax.

Average income tax rates determine the portion of total income that is paid in taxation. The pattern of average rates is the one that is necessary for appraising the distributional equity of taxation. Under a progressive income tax the average income tax rate rises with income. Average income tax rates generally increase with income, both because personal allowances are permitted for the taxpayer and dependents and due to that marginal tax rates are graduated; on the other side of things, preferential treatment of income received for the most part by high-income households may dwarf these effects, forcing regressivity, as displayed by average tax rates that lessen as income rises.
